What Are Clear Aligners and How Do They Work?

Achieving a straighter smile no longer requires the use of traditional metal braces. Clear aligners have become an increasingly popular orthodontic treatment, offering a more discreet and comfortable way to align teeth.

Understanding Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are custom-made, transparent plastic trays designed to gradually shift teeth into their desired position. Unlike conventional braces, they do not use metal brackets or wires, making them a nearly invisible alternative for those seeking orthodontic treatment. Each set of aligners is worn for a specified period, typically around two weeks, before being replaced with the next in the series.

Made from a strong, medical-grade thermoplastic material, clear aligners are designed to fit snugly over the teeth. They are custom-created for each patient using digital scans or impressions to ensure precision and effectiveness in treatment.

How Do Clear Aligners Work?

The process of straightening teeth with clear aligners involves a series of steps that ensure gradual and controlled movement. Before starting treatment, we will assess the patient’s teeth and determine whether clear aligners are a suitable option. Digital scans, photographs, and X-rays are typically taken to create a personalised treatment plan.

Using advanced 3D imaging technology, our dentist will map out a step-by-step plan for the movement of the teeth. This plan helps predict how long the treatment will take and provides patients with an idea of how their smile will look once treatment is completed.

Once the aligners are fabricated, the patient will receive a series of trays to be worn in a specific order. Each set of aligners is worn for about 20 to 22 hours per day, with removal allowed only for eating, drinking (except water), brushing, and flossing. Every two weeks (or as advised by our dentist), the aligners are replaced with the next set in the series. Each new aligner set applies gentle pressure on the teeth, gradually shifting them into the planned position.

Throughout the treatment, patients will have periodic check-ups to monitor progress and make any necessary adjustments. Once treatment is complete, patients are typically advised to wear a retainer to maintain their new smile and prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions.

The Benefits of Clear Aligners

  • Discreet Appearance – The transparent material makes them virtually invisible, allowing patients to straighten their teeth without drawing attention to their treatment.

  • Comfortable Fit – Unlike traditional braces, clear aligners do not have metal brackets or wires that may cause irritation to the gums and cheeks.

  • Removability – Being able to remove the aligners allows for easier eating, drinking, and oral hygiene maintenance.

  • Predictable Results – The digital planning process gives patients a clear idea of their expected results before they begin treatment.
